Abstract

The play French Town (1994), by Franco-Ontarian playwright Michel Ouellette, presents a large number of lexical and oral structures typical of the French spoken in Ontario and seeks to describe the linguistic practices of Franco-Ontarians in a realistic way. What strategies should be implemented to overcome the constraints related to translation? How to translate in Italian the same identity, subversive and aesthetic functions that the Franco-Ontarian conveys in the play? Should a translation of a Franco-Ontarian literary work, in terms of language-culture, offer something Franco-Ontarian to Italian readers? These are the questions this contribution attempts to answer.
